FAQ
Q: Does NMP3 Ripper use secure ripping like EAC or cdparanoia?
A: No, unfortunately. It's something I really want to see, but the time just doesn't exist.
Q: What do the presets mean?
A: The LAME project has a good explanation on what each means.
Q: NMP3 Ripper is S-L-O-W!! Do Something!
A: LAME, the encoder NMP3 Ripper uses, is inherently slow.
I'm looking into possible Altivec enhancements for LAME, but just simply haven't had the time.
Like that old ketchup commercial used to say, "Good things come to those that wait." Quality encoding takes time.
The alt-presets are slow, but you can speed things up by specifying an expert setting, or chosing --r3mix.
You'll still get very good quality, and it will be a little bit faster.
Q: I don't want to read the LAME docs; what other good encoding options exist?
A: I highly recommend using one of the 3 basic options for best results, but here are some others you may try if you find NMP3 Ripper to be too slow:
| -b 256 -h | This gives you a constant bitrate of 256 at "high" quality. You can change 256 to anything you'd like. Anything below 192 results in very noticable distortion, in my opinion. |
Q: Why do you only have the presets available in the GUI? You should map every little insignificant and worthless LAME option in the GUI! Your program sucks!
A: NMP3 Ripper was originally conceived to do one thing and one thing only: Rip an entire CD to mp3 using LAME as easily as possible. There are a zillion other lame frontends out there; if you want a mapping of every command line option of LAME, use something else. It'll never happen with NMP3 Ripper.
Q: Where is the LAME documentation?
A: right here
User Requested Features:
Given enough time, I'll probably implement all of these. Want NMP3 Ripper to do something that's not listed here?
- - Secure ripping
- - A real progress bar
- - Ability to add CDs to freedb
- - Rip cds as one single track
- - drag and drop support
- - read cd info from stored local version of iTunes library
- - Watch for content of an NMP3 folder, do actions based on presence of files
- - setup cron job to encode mp3's at a specific time.
- - Force version 2.3 or 1.1 id3 tags
- - better way to select individual tracks for encoding
- - add iTunes "encoded by" tag information (as shown in iTunes "get info" box)
- - batch encoding: Rip 8-16 cds, then encode them all in one go
Known Bugs
- - rare - Pops and clicks in resultant mp3s. I think this is a problem with specific hardware and not NMP3 Ripper per-se. Solving this myself is going to require a significant investment in time (i.e. implementing something akin to EAC).
- - incomplete support for unicode or UTF-8 (freedb only supports Latin 1 char encoding right now)
